Clinical documentation and critiques of clinical sessions, attendance and participation in intensive workshop, essay, clinical supervisor endorsement.
Topic description

The topic provides each student with the fundamental practice principles underpinning cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). The topic is delivered as an intensive workshop and online modules. The content includes medico-legal considerations, ethics in counselling and psychotherapy, and stepped-care models in mental health. Also included is clinical supervision, case formulations and behavioural activation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to offer students applied learning opportunities that ensure fundamental principles underpinning cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) are recognised and demonstrated. Students will gain a clear understanding of a stepped-care approach to cognitive and behavioural assessment and interventions guided by evidence-based models of care. Particular consideration is given to clinical supervision frameworks and reflective practice principles.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competencies in producing a range of clinical documentation that is professional, accurate, informed and in line with best practice standards within an Australian medico-legal framework
  2. Critique and evaluate clinical sessions for fidelity to a cognitive behaviour therapy model
  3. Recognise the values and principals of clinical supervision and reflective practice
  4. Differentiate between cognitive and behavioural therapy interventions
  5. Operate within a professional and ethical framework that aligns with an interdisciplinary mental health context
  6. Apply behavioural activation strategies for depression within a supervisory relationship
