Topic description

This topic will explore common degenerative neurological conditions, those which exemplify typical rehabilitation challenges, as well as those that may be particularly challenging to treat. We will consider the principles of rehabilitation as they apply to individuals whose needs consistently change with time, with an emphasis on symptom management, teamwork and the challenges for future rehabilitation service delivery.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Increase the student's understanding of rehabilitation and treatment approaches as they apply to a person with a degenerative neurological condition
  • Develop sound clinical reasoning for treatment decisions as they apply to those with a degenerative neurological condition
  • Provide considerations for the development of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for a client with a degenerative neurological condition
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Compare and discuss the clinical presentations for a range of common degenerative neurological conditions
  2. Critically evaluate current rehabilitation interventions used for those with degenerative neurological conditions
  3. Evaluate common symptomatic treatments for people with degenerative neurological conditions and explain their rationale
  4. Select, apply and evaluate common assessments and outcome measures used in the rehabilitation of those with a degenerative neurological condition
  5. Create a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for a client with a degenerative neurological condition
