Topic description
This topic will explore the management, design, delivery and evaluation of interdisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation for varying respiratory diseases. Client assessment, outcomes, exercise modes, training principles and approaches for behaviour change and self-management will be reviewed. Current clinical guidelines from Australian and international stakeholders will be discussed together with recent literature to provide contextual evidence for pulmonary rehabilitation practice.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of pulmonary rehabilitation principles for the promotion of self-management within the rehabilitation of those with respiratory disease

  2. Foster understanding of key requirements in the rehabilitation of people with a respiratory disease

  3. Increase students’ knowledge and skills in pulmonary rehabilitation program design, implementation and evaluation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and apply current evidence including clinical guidelines, to the pulmonary rehabilitation of those with respiratory diseases

  2. Develop and implement a pulmonary rehabilitation program for a respiratory condition with consideration of available resources

  3. Detail methods of assessment, approaches for behaviour change and treatment appropriate to the interdisciplinary rehabilitation of those with a respiratory disease

  4. Determine and evaluate appropriate and effective evidence based pulmonary rehabilitation techniques relevant the student’s own clinical profession.
