Topic description
This topic involves a part-time clinical placement in a rehabilitation setting over the semester. Students will observe, assess, treat and review rehabilitation plans, and receive valuable feedback from supervising clinicians. Particularly beneficial to those with experience outside the Australian health system who are wanting to reinforce their education within the local Australian context, or those seeking further clinical exposure, this topic will provide a basis for understanding holistic, integrated, team-based care.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Introduce students to the management and function of an Australian rehabilitation unit

  2. Provide an opportunity for students to apply their theoretical knowledge for skill development, and participate in delivering holistic, integrated rehabilitation care

  3. Encourage students to think critically about treatment options, through reflection and the application of evidence based research.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically appraise rehabilitation interventions based on current evidence

  2. Apply patient-centred goal setting principles to holistically assess a patient attending a rehabilitation facility

  3. Comprehensively discuss the varying discipline roles as they apply to a patient with complex rehabilitation needs

  4. Develop and implement a rehabilitation plan for a patient, and critically analyse its effectiveness and delivery.
