Topic description
This topic will identify and investigate key areas of interest for nursing staff providing leadership and clinical practice within rehabilitation. Contemporary frameworks for rehabilitation nursing practice will be explored in conjunction with the Australasian Rehabilitation Nurses Association's Rehabilitation Nursing Competency Standards for Registered Nurses.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Review core principles of nursing rehabilitation practice and discuss key considerations for leadership within this area

  2. Explore contemporary frameworks for nursing rehabilitation practice and review associated competency standards.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically appraise contemporary frameworks for rehabilitation nursing practice

  2. Apply the Australasian Rehabilitation Nurses Association's Rehabilitation Nursing Competency Standards for Registered Nurses to the delivery of rehabilitation services

  3. Select appropriate resources and staffing for maximal impact upon the individual patient, demonstrated through the design of a nursing service

  4. Design and apply sound clinical reasoning in the development of a rehabilitation plan for someone requiring nursing care.
