Topic description
This topic covers key principles for the rehabilitation of a person with stroke. Emphasising both acute priorities as well as longer term rehabilitation needs, we will discuss the physiology of stroke, and explore current research in regards to interventions and optimal service delivery including interprofessional collaboration. A focus on practical clinical skill development will accompany this topic.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Review and update the student's knowledge of the aetiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of stroke and stroke recovery

  2. Explore current interventions used in the rehabilitation of those with stroke

  3. Broaden student's awareness of the rehabilitation needs throughout the continuum of care and beyond discharge from the rehabilitation service.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Define the risk factors, clinical features, and neurophysiology of stroke

  2. Critically evaluate the role of investigative tools such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalograpy (MEG) for stroke recovery

  3. Comprehensively explain the role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team, and demonstrate appropriate goal setting principles within stroke care

  4. Critically appraise current research in regards to stroke interventions including the current Stroke Guidelines, and demonstrate application for optimising current and evidence-based practice.
