Topic description

This topic will introduce students to Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, person-centred, goal orientated conversation about change that is done with someone to address the common problem of ambivalence about change. It involves strengthening the person's motivation and commitment to change in an atmosphere of partnership, acceptance, compassion and evocation.

The topic will cover:

  1. The Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
  2. OARS: Client-centred counselling skills
  3. Recognising and responding to change talk
  4. Eliciting and strengthening change talk
  5. Rolling with resistance
  6. Developing a change plan
  7. Consolidating client commitment
  8. Switching between MI and other approaches
Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, and confidence to use Motivational Interviewing in their practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply the underlying principles and processes of Motivational Interviewing
  2. Make effective and comprehensive use of communication skills, collaborative problem identification and goal setting with people seeking to make a health behaviour change
  3. Critically reflect how Motivational Interviewing can lead to health behaviour change
