Topic description

This topic presents an introduction to the concepts and underlying principles of environmental impact assessment (EIA). It focuses on the process of EIA and its practice in Australia. An overview of the methods used to identify and assess the environmental impact of major proposals is provided. The effectiveness and adequacy of EIA practice in Australia is considered.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the intentions and role of EIA in environmental management
  • Draw students' attention to aspects of the EIA process requiring further investigation and improvement for enhanced environmental outcomes
  • Highlight variability of EIA processes in different states of Australia and in other countries to illustrate strengths and challenges in existing EIA practice
  • Provide students with the opportunity to simulate specific activities in the EIA process
  • Provide students with the opportunity to evaluate key EIA documentation
  • Encourage students to develop a range of transferable skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
