Topic description
The topic develops cognitive skills in the critical examination of the Writings of the Hebrew Bible. The nature of biblical Hebrew Poetry will be explored along with the historical and cultural contexts which gave rise to these texts. A range of texts from the Writings will be selected for exegesis. These texts will be examined in light of their historical and contemporary relevance.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to

  • evaluate the distinctive nature of the Writings in the Hebrew Bible
  • demonstrate critical analysis of scriptures and the ability to prepare an exegesis
  • develop skills in the critical evaluation of the scholarly literature in the field of Biblical Studies
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • exegetical skills in interpreting diverse texts from the Writings of the Hebrew bible
  • the ability to critically evaluate methodological issues surrounding the study of the Writings of the Hebrew Bible
  • research skills of identifying, accessing, and analysing relevant primary and secondary sources related to the Writings and its interpretation
  • hermeneutical sensitivity to the implications of the study of the Writings of the Hebrew Bible and diversity of contemporary interpretations
