Topic description
This topic develops cognitive skills in the critical examination of the Biblical Wisdom writings. Interpretation draws upon a range methodological approaches, with a particular focus on key theological scenes throughout these writings. Relevance of these theologies to contemporary understanding of the world and society are explored.
Educational aims
This topic aims to
- evaluate the concept of biblical wisdom and the wisdom writings, and explore this literature in its historical, literary, and cultural contexts
- identify and critically evaluate the main theological themes in the wisdom writings
- develop critical approaches to the study of the wisdom writings
- interpret the significance of the wisdom writings for a contemporary context
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate:
- exegetical skills in interpreting diverse texts from the Wisdom literature
- the ability to evaluate critically interpretive and theological issues surrounding wisdom writings and their ongoing relevance for contemporary theologies of Creator and creation
- the ability to critically evaluate methodological issues surrounding the study of the Wisdom literature
- research skills of identifying, accessing, and analysing relevant primary and secondary sources related to Wisdom literature and its interpretation
- hermeneutical sensitivity to the implications of the study of Wisdom literature and diversity of contemporary interpretations
