Topic description
This topic introduces the framework for festival and event design and management and investigates the concept of events as a reflection of culture. It looks at history, definitions, typologies and roles of festivals and events and the event industry within the community, and in the broader tourism context.

It investigates the different stages of event design, management and marketing and their practical application. It provides students with knowledge of event design, staging principles and event management methodology.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Classify festivals and events according to contemporary definitions and Getz' typology

  2. Generate hypothetical solutions to meet design briefs

  3. Identify the roles and relationships of festivals and events to the host organisation, community, state or nation and within a broader tourism context

  4. Discuss the principles of event design and the different stages of management and marketing of festivals and events.
