Topic description
VFX Theory and Practice introduces students to the history of VFX, and its use and production in the film industry. Students will theoretically analyse and deconstruct segments of movies which have used VFX and then practically reconstruct the effects using the appropriate industry techniques and software.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the history of VFX in the film industry

  • introduce students to the VFX techniques used in historically significant VFX movies

  • enable students to theoretically analyse and deconstruct VFX segments from historically significant VFX movies

  • provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the industry standard VFX techniques and software

  • enable students to practically reconstruct segments of VFX scenes from historically significant VFX movies
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:

  • have a comprehensive understanding of the historical role of VFX in the film industry

  • be able to identify VFX techniques used in key historically significant VFX movies

  • be able to theoretically analyse and deconstruct VFX segments from historically significant VFX movies

  • be able to report on their analysis and deconstruction of VFX segments from historically significant VFX movies
