This topic introduces students to foundational issues of Synoptic Studies, including sources, provenance and distinctive theologies, through a critical study of one of the Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew or Luke). Through the application of a variety of exegetical methods, the topic will evaluate the interrelationship and literary design of the gospels and analyse them in their broader cultural and sociological contexts. The hermeneutical aspects of interpreting these ancient texts in contemporary cultural contexts will be critically evaluated.

This topic aims to:

develop foundational skills in evaluating the Synoptic Gospels critically
analyse the Gospels in their literary, historical, and cultural contexts in the 1st Century CE
analyse how the Gospel writers sought to address the pastoral issues of their context and developed unique insights into Jesus, discipleship and community
analyse and apply appropriate exegetical tools to interpret the Gospels, for a range of purposes and audiences
evaluate the role of the Gospels in understanding a range of theological messages, in both ancient and contemporary contexts

apply a range of theoretical perspectives to Synoptic Gospel interpretation
demonstrate advanced skills in the critical analysis of scriptures through the application of exegetical methods
analyse the contexts and communities that shaped the work of the Gospel writers, and synthesise a variety of source materials
evaluate the impact of these issues on contemporary understandings of Gospel texts
