This topic applies and assesses core knowledge and concepts that underpin socially responsible health professional practice to the clinical setting including continuity of patient care, ethics of practice and professionalism. Reflections on theory and practice will enhance coping strategies, professional relationships and ethical and legal issues. During the topic students work with patients and community groups putting their leadership skills into practice. Students will follow a selected patient through the patient's journey of care across the range of health settings, including general practice. The focus is on understanding health care provision in the health system from the patient's point of view.

The aim if this topic is to examine the social, professional and health system context to the clinical experience students will have during their clinical placements. This context is brought into focus through a range of exercises which provide students with an opportunity for scholarship and reflection on the ethical context of clinical practice and the concept of continuity of patient care from a patient and system perspective. Professional development is fostered through the required in-training progress reports and a portfolio.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Describe the various components of continuity of care

2. Describe the influence of continuity of care on both the quality of care provided and improved patient outcomes

3. Display competence in summarising clinical cases

4. Display competence in identifying and defining relevant ethical, legal and cultural issues

5. Demonstrate skills and knowledge in ethical and legal analysis

6. Demonstrate sensitivity to the wider responsibility of health care professionals to community needs

7. Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for differing ethical perspectives

8. Perform as an ethical professional in all clinical placements.
