Topic description
This topic provides a foundation for the theological study of Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ. It will include a study of biblical, historical, doctrinal and contemporary approaches to Jesus Christ and to salvation in Christ. It will include discussion of the theology of salvation in Christ in biblical, patristic, medieval, reformation, modern and contemporary theologies. It will apply a global perspective to Christology.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • to engage with and apply the fundaments of the study of Christian theology by seeking to interpret the meaning of Jesus Christ for the 21st Century
  • analyse and interpret the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus
  • introduce students to various approaches to the theology of salvation
  • investigate examples of the critical analysis of Jesus in the light of contemporary contexts, e.g., the globalisation of Christianity, the quest for justice and liberation, ecological challenges and insights, and dialogue with other religious
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate cognitive skills to investigate and analyse critically a range of Christological texts
  • evaluate and reflect critically upon at least one substantive issue in Christology, demonstrating its relevance for the contemporary world
  • demonstrate, by using the tools of theological reflection, the contemporary relevance of Jesus by engaging with at least one key contemporary context, e.g., the globalisation of Christianity, the quest for justice and liberation, ecological challenges and insights, and dialogue with other religious traditions
