This topic provides a range of activities aimed at preparing students for the transition to internship. Learning and teaching activities focus on practical application of knowledge in the clinical setting. Subjects covered include generic skills, medical emergencies, and practical transition to medical practice.

Professional Induction to Clinical Practice will be a capstone topic providing students with work ready knowledge, skills and health professional behaviour as required for the junior doctor role.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the extent and nature of harm arising from the provision of health care within complex health care systems.
Demonstrate that they can recognize and assess deteriorating and critically unwell patients who require immediate care and perform common emergency procedures, including caring for the unconscious patient and performing CPR.
Select and perform safely a range of common procedural skills.
Demonstrate personal capacity to function in a team in an emergency context.
Explain the main principles of ethical practice and apply these to learning scenarios in clinical practice.
Self evaluate their own professional practice and demonstrate life-long learning behaviours.
Demonstrate an understanding of how teamwork and communication contributes to patient safety, how breakdowns in these areas can lead to adverse events and techniques that can be used to overcome these issues.
