Topic description
This topic provides a foundation in Biblical (Koine) Greek. Through the examination of the grammar and vocabulary of Koine Greek, students learn to read and translate some passages of the New Testament and gain an understanding of the different insights which the study of this ancient language can offer.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • provide foundation skills in and knowledge of biblical (Koine) Greek

  • learn how to understand grammar, with a focus on verbal forms

  • learn how to use lexicographical aids to assist in translation and parsing
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • the acquisition of an understanding of the basic grammar of Koine Greek

  • the acquisition of the requisite skills and vocabulary to translate short passages from the Greek New Testament, with appropriate lexicographical aids

  • an understanding of English grammar

  • analytic and research skills in using biblical commentaries that refer to the Greek text
