Topic description
In this topic, students are introduced to primary health care nursing within the general practice and community nursing context. They will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills for collaborative practice within a range of team settings to promoting health for individuals, families and communities.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to develop specialised primary health care knowledge for practice in a range of general practice and community nursing settings to enable early intervention and health promotion for to individuals, families and communities.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of the PHC nurse working in General Practice and community nursing
- critically evaluate the role of the practice nurse in relation to population health, data collection and patient needs
- formulate, implement and evaluate nursing practice protocols, guidelines and clinical pathways using evidence based best practice principles in the context of general practice
- employ sound ethical, professional, legal and creative problem solving abilities in decision making
- critically analyse nursing practice within general practice to promote optimal outcomes for patients
