Topic description
The topic aims to provide the knowledge to understand the anatomy, physiology and pathology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and its management. The content covers aetiology, incidence, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of diabetes mellitus across the lifespan, principles of clinical assessment, principles of lifestyle and pharmacological management and assessment and management of acute and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce the key concepts related to managing Diabetes Mellitus (DM) across the lifespan.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Examine the aetiology, incidence, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of pre-diabetes and the different types of diabetes mellitus on health and well-being
- Evaluate a clinical assessment including principles of diabetes management and diagnostic criteria and other pathology testing
- Critically apply evidence based practice principles in examining the management of a person with diabetes mellitus
- Apply the principles of lifestyle and pharmacological management for people with diabetes mellitus
- Determine the assessment and management of acute and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus
