Topic description
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop and extend students’ understanding of and skills in:

  1. Methods of collecting data and evaluating its reliability, accuracy and relevance
  2. Tailoring oral presentations to suit topics and audiences
  3. Completing submissions and applications, both pro-forma and unstructured
  4. Developing passive promotional materials to support active participation in policy development and implementation
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Critically analyse given data for reliability and relevance to specific policy scenarios
  2. Prepare and deliver an oral presentation, supported by suitable media
  3. Prepare an application form or submission document; and complete a given application form or submission document
  4. Analyse a wide range of materials (e.g. websites, pamphlets, websites) designed to support policy-related campaigns
  5. Review and critically evaluate relevant literature
  6. Discuss research ethics and how they apply to research of interest
  7. Identify knowledge gaps and develop a research question
