With a focus on Internet protocols, the students will study the principles, standards, processes and technologies associated with computer networking and data communications, and the cybersecurity associated with these. This will include the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network protocols, network communication, network classifications, aspects of communications cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, threats, risk assessment, and legal and ethical issues.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of computer networks and cybersecurity including the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network protocols, network communication, network classifications, aspects of communications cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, threats, threat controls, risk assessment, and legal and ethical issues.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the basic types of network architecture and protocols
  2. Discuss the role and importance of network communication models and standards
  3. Explain security issues in the context of computer networks
  4. Analyse and evaluate network communications vulnerabilities and threats and apply appropriate controls
  5. Explain the legal and ethical implications of security in the context of networks and networked communications
  6. Survey and evaluate a selection of emerging networking and cybersecurity technologies
