This topic addresses the interface between early childhood education and care with the lives of children and families in diverse contexts. Through case studies of early childhood educators working effectively in partnership with diverse families and a range of agencies, the topic develops an understanding of the social constructions of families and childhoods, the social practices they adopt and the services in which they participate. Approaches to strengths-based, family centred practice are also explored.

This topic aims to:

assist students to develop a deep understanding of the social construction of families
introduce observational and analytical skills in relation to the concept of family-centred, strengths-based practice in early childhood settings
enable students to critically analyse and evaluate a wide variety of resources and approaches for working in partnership with families to enhance learning opportunities for young children, including those with special rights
support students to develop a research-based approach to examine the social construction of families and childhoods
guide students as they develop an understanding of the processes involved in planning, implementing and evaluating an inclusive curriculum in early childhood settings

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

select appropriate ways of gathering, analysing and critiquing knowledge of families and childhoods
identify the contemporary issues affecting families and young children and the implications these have for early childhood educators working within an equity and social justice framework
apply a family-centred, strengths based approach to working in partnership with parents and other agencies in early childhood settings
analyse the processes involved in planning an inclusive program
develop and design elements of a successful partnership program that support new understandings in the 21st century
