Topic description

Implementing elements of the design specification, concept development, testing and evaluation, and operation of an engineering system based around the National Weir-Warman Design and Build Competition. Project management and communication with other engineers and the community. Engineering report of all aspects of the design.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with essential practice in mechanical engineering design, communication and management.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Effectively apply design process principles (i.e. problem identification, concept generation, concept selection and design embodiment)
  2. Demonstrate communication skills (e.g. logical cohesion, writing a research paper, integrating evidence and the effective presentation)
  3. Demonstrate project management skills (e.g. materials selection, sourcing and budgeting)
  4. Demonstrate professional skills (e.g. team work, record keeping)
  5. Understanding of OH&S principles and practices
  6. Develop risk assessments and standard operating procedures for a developed product
  7. Conduct independent research into a design problem to critically review, analyse, evaluate, and present findings in a structured, referenced, and well-written research report
