TOUR9000B Tourism Dissertation (9/27 units)

This topic is taught and assessed as a continuum.

This topic offers students an opportunity to undertake an extended research topic, within the broad field of tourism, and will investigate a theoretical or practical issue within tourism. The dissertation should give evidence of the student's abilities in collecting and evaluating information, constructing, testing or defending an argument or thesis, and critically examining the available literature in their chosen area of enquiry. The area of study must be developed in consultation with the supervisor.

This topic aims to:

• Develop advanced independent research skills in an area of tourism or festival and event design and management
• Allow students to generate particular skills or knowledge relating to tourism theory or practice
• Provide advanced research skills, including the ability to critically evaluate literature
• Develop capacity to draw on a range of research methodologies suitable to their topic

1. Analyse and critically evaluate information relevant to an area of research
2. Apply theoretical propositions to an appropriate research methodology, as part of an extended research project
3. Critically assess literature relating to tourism theory and practice
4. Carry out research in a specialised area, including the analysis of complex ideas and/or data
5. Demonstrate mastery of theoretical and/or practical approaches to tourism
6. Communicate theoretical and/or practical knowledge appropriately to a range of audiences
