Topic description

This topic focuses on written and oral communication skills in graduate research. It develops students' academic communication skills at an advanced level within the specific context of their course of study. The subjects covered include linguistic features of academic communication, syntax and idiom; structure and argument; research genres such as literature reviews and research proposals; academic publishing; editing and peer review. Students will gain experience in editing their own and their peers' work.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Determine the choices needed for effective written and oral communication for research purposes
  • Introduce students how to assess communication styles for different purposes
  • Evaluate the use of clear, concise, and accurate English in research writing
  • Support students to select appropriate language features for communicative impact in research settings
  • Introduce students how to critique self and other's written work for revision and editing
Expected learning outcomes
