Topic description

In this topic students will work with a supervising lecturer to complete all stages of a major digital story telling project, in a field of screen or digital media production. The project will normally relate to prior research or knowledge.

Under the supervision of the lecturer, students will manage the production of their major project including crew, participants, logistics and schedules.

Educational aims
This topic aims to develop:

  • an in-depth ability to identify, develop, and research appropriate digital stories

  • high level skills in producing and directing digital stories

  • an in-depth understanding of complex issues related project budgeting, participant identification, logistics and crewing

  • advanced project management and scheduling skills for the production of digital stories

  • advanced communication, problem solving skills and/or people management

  • the ability to analyse script content critically, and implement improvements via video editing and post-production

  • the ability to produce a final project with a clear and strong narrative, that reflects the research process
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate technical and creative skills to investigate and analyse appropriate digital stories

  • synthesise complex ideas and processes to complete a major project, from development to completion, of a short digital story of 8-15 minutes duration, or comparable digital media project

  • complete deliverables for exhibition and distribution for film festivals, television broadcast, museums, public display and online

  • independently design, plan, evaluate, implement and manage production briefs relating to budgets, locations, participants and logistical issues

  • critically analyse practical, production and logistical issues related to digital story production, including the appropriate selection, use and maintenance of equipment

  • critically self-analyse footage/imagery obtained through personal practice

  • critically evaluate administrative requirements for individual projects, and apply standard practices in risk mitigation and workplace health and safety
