Progressive exercise is a key element in the management of cardiometabolic, and respiratory conditions; for restoration of physiological function and amelioration of functional decline in patients with these conditions. This topic will focus on exercise as part of the overall rehabilitation process of patients with cardiovascular, metabolic, kidney, and respiratory disease. Students will become aware and consider the pathophysiological processes, psychosocial considerations and the medico-pharmacological interventions in the context of interdisciplinary practice and provision of appropriate exercise strategies in these conditions. Students will also learn and practice clinical exercise assessments of functional and physiological capacity as well as interpretation of clinical data relevant to a person's condition and exercise management. Using case study scenarios and exposure in clinical placement, students will be exposed to a variety of exercise strategies aimed at managing common cardiac, vascular, metabolic, kidney, and pulmonary conditions. Particular focus will be on providing evidence-based exercise interventions to design and deliver safe and effective exercise interventions in populations presenting with these conditions. This topic requires students to complete a clinical placement.
