Topic description

This topic provides training in the skills required for practising graduate Biotechnologists and will cover reviewing and critically analysing scientific literature, research planning and methodology, project management and team performance. This topic takes students through the processes and paradigms for successful research performance and highlights the concepts used to commercialise biotechnology discoveries and innovations. Students will work individually and in project teams to demonstrate the value of project management in research and development and how it is used as a framework to plan, execute, review and manage the integration of science and technology with commercial imperatives that underpin the development of the knowledge economy.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop the skills required for a practicing biotechnologist with an emphasis on participating in the modern knowledge economy
  • Prepare students to undertake research in biotechnology and keep pace with the rapid developments in the field
  • Develop project management, teamwork and problem-solving skills by integrating and applying fundamental knowledge to practical applications
  • Enhance students' effectiveness as oral, written and interpersonal communicators to the range of audiences with whom they will interact as practicing biotechnologists
  • Develop self-reflective practice in skills development
  • Develop an understanding of potential career paths in biotechnology
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
