Topic description

This topic examines the phenomenon of English as a global language. It investigates how English became the global language, and analyses issues raised by a global language and the implications of a global language for the teaching of English as a second or other language.

This topic aims to:

  • Investigate and analyse issues related to English as a global language
  • Develop skills to critically reflect on the role of English in the world
  • Examine theories related to the implication of the global language, and their relationship to classroom practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically analyse a theories on how English became the global language
  2. Examine and discuss a range of arguments and perspectives on English as a global language
  3. Critically analyse English as a global language, and reflect on the implications for classroom practice
  4. Demonstrate mastery in the evaluation of their own and others' classroom practice in terms of the issues raised by English as a global language
