Topic description

In this topic students will design and implement their own individual research project in clinical research. In part A students will design the project and apply for any required approval processes such as ethics. In parts B, C and D, which can be completed consecutively or concurrently, students will collect and analyse all data associated with the project and write a final paper.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to conduct a supervised research study in the broad area of clinical research and/or its contributing disciplines. The findings of the study are to be presented in a final paper, which shall be examined by two examiners.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge through scholarly literature
  2. Generate and justify a research question(s) or hypotheses that will generate new knowledge
  3. Design a study which generates a substantial contribution to knowledge by appropriately addressing a research question(s) through suitable research methods and principles
  4. Construct an ethics application for health-related research and work productively within a team of experts in the field
  5. Analyse and demonstrate an integrated knowledge of research data
  6. Effectively disseminate research outcomes to a variety of audiences using highly developed communication skills
  7. Synthesise a sustained argument in an area of specialisation to demonstrate cognitive and technical skills in a body of knowledge or practice
