Assumed knowledge
It is assumed that students have up to date theoretical and clinical knowledge relating to midwifery practice, including basic knowledge of investigations and diagnostics.
Topic description
This topic covers requisite knowledge and skills in investigations and diagnostic testing in midwifery practice. This topic is one of two that prepares the Registered Midwife to be eligible to apply for endorsement for scheduled medicines with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Educational aims
This topic aims to prepare Registered Midwives with the knowledge, skills and competence in investigations and diagnostics. This will include critical elements relating to assessment, management and referral of women throughout the childbearing continuum, as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for endorsement for scheduled medicines.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Assess clinical presentations and develop a diagnostic and investigations plan in partnership with the woman and in consultation with and/or referral to other health care providers as necessary
  2. Evidence comprehensive knowledge of investigations and diagnostic tests across the continuum of midwifery care and as applied to individual contexts of practice
  3. Demonstrate the capacity to autonomously order and act on screening and diagnostic tests according to applicable legislation, regulations and policies
  4. Critically analyse the scope of practice of the endorsed midwife and safety, quality and risk management in relation to investigations and diagnostics
