Topic description
This topic provides students with an overview of the context within which hospitals receive and consume financial resources, international perspectives on cost drivers, funding allocation models specifically the casemix model, preparing the annual hospital budget, analyzing and interpreting budget reports and financial statements, internal financial controls, hospital performance indicators, and capital investment decision making.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop and widen students' knowledge and understanding of western approaches to hospital financial management. The topic covers both the wider context within which hospital funding is allocated and managed, and financial management techniques at the practical level.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Apply a number of practical financial management techniques relevant to hospital financial management, and better communicate financial management issues with others.

  • Assess the potential usefulness of western methods of hospital financial management in Chinese hospitals and health services.

  • Having gained a wider perspective, critically assess and identify potential improvements in the funding and financial management of their own organisations.
