This topic will introduce students to a range of theoretical debates concerned with the rise of globalisation in the last two decades and in its wider historical context. It explores the various definitions of globalisation and the assessment of its impact upon the international system of nation states. It also explores the possible contradiction between the rise of globalisation and the rise of localism that has also been a feature of the increasing permeability of national boundaries.

This topic aims to:

Provide students with an advanced understanding of processes of globalisation and regionalisation
Investigate globalisation and regionalisation with specific reference to the Asia-Pacific region
Introduce students to critical theoretical approaches
Develop student’s critical analytical skills
Examine current trends and future projections for globalization and regionalisation.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

Critically analyse current key topics in the field of globalisation and regionalisation
Show a broad-based overview of the role of multinational companies as key actors behind economic globalisation and regionalisation
Demonstrate a critical understanding of how globalisation has affected and influenced the regional economic development of Least Developed Countries
Show a critical awareness of conceptual and empirical issue concerning the so-called ‘dark side of globalisation’
Analyse important global challenges such as ensuring secure future energy supplies and responding to the threat of climate change
Articulate an overview of the challenges associated with governing globalisation and regionalisation.
