Assumed knowledge
This topic assumes that students have already started to practice as an experienced registered nurse in a clinical setting and will be beginning to review the role of Nurse Practitioner and the responsibilities it has in the delivery of care within an advanced nursing practice scope of practice.

Topic description
This topic focuses on the use of diagnostic procedures as aids to comprehensive clinical assessment for nurses preparing for advanced practice. Students will learn how to use diagnostic aids in comprehensive client/patient assessments in order to support the formulation a diagnosis and to plan care.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to develop the ability to use a range of diagnostic aids as part of their comprehensive client/patient assessments to formulate diagnoses and develop care plans.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge about the types of diagnostics used in the student's context of practice

  2. Apply diagnostics to practice

  3. Articulate the nursing responsibilities in requesting diagnostic procedures

  4. Articulate the legal and professional boundaries relating to the inclusion of diagnostics in daily advanced practice

  5. Develop inter professional relationships in requesting diagnostic procedures in practice

  6. Develop clinical practice guidelines for legal, ethical, organisational and clinical support for practice

  7. Critically analyse and reflect about own progress towards achieving the cultural capabilities of respect, communication, safety and quality, reflection, and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their influence on diagnostic interactions and decision making

  8. Develop and appraise strategies centred on achieving culturally safe health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
