Assumed knowledge
Practice as an experienced registered nurse in a clinical setting and students will be beginning to review the role of Nurse Practitioner and the responsibilities it has in the delivery of care within an advanced nursing practice scope of practice.

Topic description

This topic focuses on the use of diagnostic procedures as aids to comprehensive clinical assessment for nurses preparing for advanced practice. Students will learn how to use diagnostic aids in comprehensive client/patient assessments in order to support the formulation a diagnosis and to plan care.

Educational aims

This topic aims for students to develop the ability to use a range of diagnostic aids as part of their comprehensive client/patient assessments to formulate diagnoses and develop care plans.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop techniques of therapeutic interviewing to collect health histories
  2. Justify and explain diagnostic and clinical reasoning, assessment methods, and choice of differential diagnosis
  3. Explain the relevance of specificity and sensitivity of diagnostic tests to inform decision making and diagnostic interpretation
  4. Examine and demonstrate building of intra and interprofessional relationships using shared decision making to develop a plan of care
  5. Critically analyse and reflect on progress towards achieving the cultural capabilities of respect, communication, advocacy, and safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  6. Evaluate the quality use of medicines to improve health outcomes
  7. Plan integrated coordinated care and apply primary health care principles to make best possible use of health resources that supports the continuity of care for patients
