This topic assumes that students have already started to reflect on their own practice and will be beginning to review the role of Nurse Practitioner and the responsibilities it has in the delivery of care within an advanced nursing practice scope of practice.

Topic description
This unit of study focuses on the professional and leadership aspects of the role which are essential to the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice. The contemporary legal, ethical and political issues surrounding the Nurse Practitioner's ability to provide care will also be explored. The study material is delivered in a way that whatever the specialty area of practice is, students will be able to contribute to the discussions, and will be able to apply knowledge to their own practice situation.
Educational aims
This topic aims to prepares the nurse practitioner for their future role as a clinical and professional leader. Students examine the political, ethical, professional and legal aspects of their role. They examine the essential requirements of the continuous quality cycle and clinical governance. This topic is based in the requirements for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner under the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Law Act (2009). This includes the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Competency Standards for Nurses Practitioners.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:
- Describe the Nurse Practitioner role in its entirety
- Discuss the legal, ethical and professional boundaries of advanced practice specific to your role
- Appraise the political nature of your role and apply this knowledge when preparing for advanced clinical practice
- Contribute to research by leading clinical and professional change that supports quality in practice and contributes to health reform
- Reflect on individual practice to achieve future learning needs that will support a cycle of continuous learning and improvement in professional and clinical domains
- Understand the principles of budget relating to clinical outcomes and performance indicators for your position
- Apply learnings about cultural capability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and the ongoing effects of colonisation to identify and include culturally safe health service initiatives within Nurse Practitioner practice
- Critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of contemporary digital health strategies on improving information exchange, health service access and decision making within health care services
- Consider the structural, legal and ethical considerations of health information technology from the perspective of both consumers and health service providers.
