Topic description

Students will design and conduct an independent study. Students will submit a report of their study in a dissertation. The dissertation will demonstrate; substantial analysis of, and research into, a problem; mastery of the relevant literature; thorough understanding of the relevant research techniques in the field of study; ability to apply research findings to the development of models, policies and practices in the field of disability studies.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to conduct a supervised research study in the broad area of disability/rehabilitation studies and/or its contributing discliplines. The findings of the study are to be presented in a dissertation of approximately 18,000 words, which shall be examined by two examiners.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify a researchable and significant problem/issue for investigation
  2. Critically appraise and synthesise the literature in an area of disability/rehabilitation
  3. Analyse, interpret and synthesise information
  4. Clearly describe the methods/procedures used in the study
  5. Present the findings from the study in a sequential/logical manner
  6. Discuss fully and coherently the meaning and implications of the findings
  7. Demonstrate an understanding links between theory and practice
  8. Demonstrate the ability to work independently
