Assignments; FLO Discussion
Topic description
This topic examines the development of language and communication in children and adults with communication difficulties. Typical language and communication development will be outlined with a brief discussion of models of language acquisition. Language and communication difficulties in people with specific disabilities will be explored as well as the critical role of early care-givers and teachers. Assessment issues will be discussed broadly, both in terms of the individual and the environment. Intervention strategies to facilitate language and communication will be examined. Specific attention will be given to early intervention, the needs of people with severe disabilities, and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

As it is a Masters level topic, it is expected that you will be able to demonstrate advanced and integrated theoretical knowledge by defining, critically analysing and evaluating research outcomes from educational and community-based intervention approaches to enhance communication and language in people with autism, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory disabilities and/or multiple disabilities.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to have advanced and integrated knowledge of:

  • Typical language and communication development, and development associated with communication and language difficulties

  • Connections made between language theory and practice in relation to normal development and development associated with language difficulties

  • Different assessment tools and intervention strategies, including AAC, that can be applied to a range of cases.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the key characteristics associated with typical language and communication development, as well as development related to communication difficulties

  2. Critically analyse the relationships between language theory in relation to typical language and communication development and development associated with communication difficulties

  3. Describe assessment and intervention issues related to a range of language and communication difficulties.
