Topic description
This topic defines the nature of brain injury and related neurological disorders. Different types of acquired brain injury are examined from a holistic point of view, with particular focus on how different forms of trauma affect the participation and learning of both children and adults. Factors which influence a person¿s participation and learning are identified. A community based rehabilitation and learning program is emphasised, as this is considered to be the most effective means of encouraging the skills and talents of people with brain injury. The distinct features of community based rehabilitation and intervention programs are examined, with case examples of effective inclusion and learning by people with brain injury in domestic, social, educational and vocational domains.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to examine and evaluate: the nature and effects of different types of brain injury; the factors which contribute to enhanced cognitive, communication, behavioural and psychological adjustment; and approaches to maximise participation in home, community, educational and employment settings for children and adults with ABI.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate advanced and integrated theoretical knowledge to:

  1. Examine the nature and effects of different types of brain injury in children and adults

  2. Define and apply core terms and concepts in rehabilitation of memory, attention, executive functioning, communication, behavioural and psychological functioning post-trauma

  3. Critically analyse and evaluate outcomes from intervention approaches for cognitive, behavioural and psychosocial skills in community based settings

  4. Interpret research findings to generate recommendations for effective participation in home, community, educational and employment settings.
