Topic description
The topic is directed towards the design, development and evaluation of disability services. Each student will be required to design and implement an evaluation plan for an existing program, service or facility. Content emphasis will relate to student interest and activities.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with an opportunity to explore and learn about:

  • Concepts and models of evaluation

  • Innovative and practical approaches to program and personnel evaluation

  • Needs assessment and policy analysis

  • Qualitative and quantitative approaches to evaluation and issues around utilisation and ethics

  • Challenges related to designing, conducting and utilising evaluation as a means of enhancing the quality of life of people living with disability.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the purposes of evaluation.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of formative and summative evaluations.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and procedural issues involved in designing, conducting, analysing and using evaluations.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of consumers in evaluation research.

  5. Determine which evaluation methodologies are most appropriate to an evaluation's purpose and priorities.

  6. Identify strategies for enhancing the meaningful involvement of individuals with disabilities in evaluations.
