Topic description

This topic is designed to enable students to develop areas of interest arising out of the theoretical and research literature in disability and rehabilitation. A range of activities, including practical work, is permissible. In each case students must indicate the ability to work independently and demonstrate mastery of the literature in an area of interest. Students may analyse and evaluate the literature in order to show its strengths and limitations. Alternatively, they may examine the possible uses or implications of the literature. This could involve discussion of how the implications might be tested, how the literature might be used in disability or rehabilitation practice, or how the literature might apply to the analysis and understanding of particular problem areas. Students will be allocated a supervisor who can provide advice on the project.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Develop areas of interest arising out of the theoretical and research literature in disability and community rehabilitation
  • Extend their skills around undertaking a critical review of existing knowledge or conducting a small scale study around a practical issue
  • Explore a range of activities around independently developing a written report around a theoretical or practical issue
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify a researchable and significant problem/issue for investigation
  2. Critically appraise and synthesise the literature in an area of disability/rehabilitation
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the links between theory and practice
  4. Demonstrate the ability to work independently
  5. Critically appraise their own learning outcomes
