INTR9062 Contemporary Issues in Gender and International Development

This topic will explore the impact of international politics on women in the Third World. Using a feminist critique of international relations theory, the underlying goal will be to consider the relationship between gender and current development issues such as development policy and planning, the environment, health, education and war.

This topic aims to:

• Familiarise students with critical approaches to gender and development within international politics
• Equip students with advanced theoretical tools for analysing contemporary issues in gender and development
• Enable students to develop a critical analysis of a relevant matter which is of interest to them in this field through a substantive research project

1. Offer a critical account of contemporary issues pertaining to Gender and International Politics
2. Critically evaluate the main theories and modes of explanation for the diversity of political contexts and experiences of non-western societies
3. Identify and demonstrate the ways in which non-western nations and peoples are empowered and disempowered in culturally specific political circumstances both within nations and beyond borders
