Topic description

This topic looks at inclusive Information and Communication Technology (iICT) and it aims to look at new and emerging technologies that may be useful to people with a disability. It is not about learning how to use a technology but rather how to look at technologies with new eyes to see a new use or potential. The technologies are examined in terms of a person centred approach and the fit with the National Standards for Disability. The topic considers the use of technology across the lifespan and is relevant to special education and disability services.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop an understanding of a range of current assistive and inclusive technologies and applications, and examine the key issues relating to the use and implementation of these technologies for individuals living with a disability
  • Explore emerging inclusive technology, and possible uses to maximise participation in home, community, education, employment or leisure for individuals living with a disability
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and evaluate a range of technology to support participation in home, community, educational or employment settings for individuals living with a disability
  2. Investigate, critically analyse and synthesise available literature relating to emerging assistive and inclusive technologies for individuals living with a disability, including their potential benefits and possible barriers
  3. Interpret research findings and apply a person-centred framework to generate recommendations for implementation of effective assistive and inclusive technologies to support participation in home, community, educational and employment settings
