Topic description
This introductory topic examines the processes of ageing, including theoretical and practical issues as they relate to individuals living with disability. The role of professional supports in relation to assisting an individual living with disability to remain well, independent and engaged in self-determination along with making plans to support any changes to physical and environmental needs as they age will be explored.
Educational aims
This topic aims to enable students to:

  • Critically discuss and analyse the issues and barriers to well-being experienced by individuals living with a disability who are ageing

  • Explain models of supports and services available to individuals living with disability who are ageing to promote well-being and independence

  • Develop a person-centred plan to support individuals living with disability who are ageing to maintain independence and promote health and well-being.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and critically analyse current literature relating to a specific area or lifestyle issue for individuals living with disability who are ageing

  2. Determine and explain issues and barriers for individuals living with disability who are ageing

  3. Develop a person-centred plan to increase the well-being, maintain independence and self-determination of an individual living with disability who is ageing.
