Thesis

This topic is an in-depth independent study into any facet of archaeology, either applied or theoretical. The topic consists of a thesis of 18,000 words to be written under the supervision of a member of staff in Archaeology. The thesis should give evidence of the student's abilities in collecting and evaluating information, constructing, testing or defending an argument or thesis, and examining critically the available literature in their chosen area of enquiry. The area of study must be developed in consultation with the supervisor.

This topic aims to:

develop advanced independent research skills in one area of archaeological theory or practice
allow students to generate particular skills/knowledge relating to an area of archaeological theory or practice
improve students' research skills and their ability to evaluate literature critically
develop students’ skills in justifying and interpreting theoretical positions, and the ability to construct, test and defend an argument

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

apply theoretical propositions to an appropriate research methodology, as part of an extended research project
assess literature relating to archaeological theory and practice critically
carry out research in a specialised area, including the analysis of complex ideas and/or data
construct, test and defend an argument
demonstrate mastery of theoretical, practical and/or political approaches to archaeology
