Topic description
This topic introduces students to diverse competent and inclusive social work practice. The diversity of client populations in various social work organisations and fields of practice are examined and cultural assessment frameworks are presented. Specific populations common to social work are identified in terms of their experiences such as loss, grief and trauma and their strength and resilience to overcome hardships. Students also develop skills associated with carrying out interventions with diverse populations in a culturally competent manner.
Educational aims
  • Introduce students to diverse contexts of social work practice;
  • Provide students with the opportunity to identify the salient factors impacting on diverse client systems;
  • Discuss culturally competent approaches that underlie social work interventions with diverse client systems;
  • Present the complexity of social work fields of practice and service organisations.
  • Provide an appreciation of the historical and international context of social work and diversity.
Expected learning outcomes
  1. Articulate diverse competent and inclusive social work practice
  2. Identify and apply cultural, personal, structural and environmental perspectives necessary for assessment of client systems
  3. Identify the essential components of culturally competent assessment and their importance in engaging in a helping relationship
  4. Delineate the various fields of practice within social work and the organisations which deliver their services.
