Topic description
This topic aims to prepare students for learning in the practicum by developing an awareness of their social work identity. Students will learn how to describe and apply particular interpersonal skills to practice situations. Students will be able to articulate a detailed understanding of social work processes, legal and ethical contexts, social work and values begin to apply theory and ethics to their practice.
Educational aims
  • Introduce students to the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with diverse individuals, families, groups, organisations, and communities;
  • Explore the impact of sociological issues including patterned inequalities, government and agency policies on the client group;
  • Develop students' understanding of fields and organisational contexts of social work
  • Familiarise students with the purpose and use of social work supervision;
  • Provide students with the opportunity to practice interpersonal skills development, including those used in interviewing, assessment and recording
  • Enable students to see how direct practice and social work ethics fit together to promote social justice goals.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Reflexively engage with their own professional identity, including developing skills to evaluate practice and integrate theory into their own professional conduct
  2. Describe a basic knowledge of the legal and ethical dimensions to Australian social work
  3. Competently perform preliminary social work professional skills, activities and tasks.
