Topic description

This topic will present research methods commonly utilised in health and clinical research. Students will complete core modules to develop a general understanding of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, before selecting modules in the area aligned to the methodology proposed for use in their thesis component.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the core analytical skills in research methodology to critically analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative data in the literature, and to subsequently design the research methodology for their proposed project. Student will acquire an early understanding of research techniques by the application of a suitable software package such as SPSS or NVivo.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to

  1. Critique examples of qualitative and quantitative research in an area related to their research field
  2. Analyse, interpret and report qualitative and quantitative data
  3. Articulate an understanding of theoretical considerations underpinning the choice of research methodology
  4. Design a study addressing the research area of interest using appropriate methodology
