Topic description
This topic examines contemporary social problems and the Australian social policy responses to these issues. Contemporary issues which affect individuals and communities will be explored including but not limited to drug and alcohol misuse; domestic and interpersonal violence; social inequalities such as those brought about by poverty; intimate relationships; rape and sexual assault and health inequalities. This topic will equip students with research and policy-led understanding of social issues and develop students' abilities to work with clients experiencing social disadvantage.
Educational aims
To enable students to understand the broader policy context of social issues -to provide students with social work contexts of social issues and to enable them to understand the relationship between personal issues and public concerns -to enable students to develop skills to apply social work knowledge and values to understanding contemporary social problems in Australia
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  1. analyse contemporary social problems in the context of Australian social work practice
  2. employ skills to understand policy responses to social issues in contemporary Australia
  3. describe Australian social policies which relate to particular social problems
  4. articulate appropriate social work responses to individual and social issues and understand the connection between social and individual issues
