Topic description

In this topic students will build on the introductory work they have done on critical thinking, scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice to further their understanding of how clinical research can be designed, conducted and evaluated. The process of constructing scientifically answerable questions and hypotheses will be explored, concepts of experimental and non-experimental research introduced and selection of appropriate methodology(s) to answer research questions discussed. The relationship of research design with evidence-based practice principles will be elaborated. In addition, the four core academic abilities will be developed to an early intermediate level: Reasoning; Professional Communication; Lifelong Learning; and Professional Role.

Educational aims

This topic aims to ensure that students can understand, critique and apply research methodology such that they are informed consumers of research to inform their clinical practice and are able to develop an understanding of themselves as clinician-researchers. Foundational research knowledge and skills that will be addressed include:

  • Formulating research questions and hypotheses
  • Selecting appropriate experimental and non-experimental research designs to test hypotheses
  • Designing and conducting clinical research
  • Relating research design to evidence-based practice principles
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Formulate a research question and related research hypotheses
  2. Explain different experimental and non-experimental research designs
  3. Critique research methodologies and outcomes with regard to their relevance to a scientific question and hypotheses
  4. Develop a plan for undertaking clinical research
  5. Explain the relationship between evidence based practice analyses and research designs
